Seaweed activities unaffected by Semporna shootout
SEMPORNA (March 10, 2013): Seaweed cultivation activities off Bum Bum Island have not been affected by the Sulu militant intrusion and shootout on March 2 at Kampung Simunul here.
For farmer Juni Toron, 36, business was on as usual, albeit being carried out in the daytime.
"Of course we were initially anxious when we heard that the intruders were there (Kampung Simunul) but thank God I can still go to Semporna town and sell my produce," he said.
Of Bajau origin, he started the endeavour seven years ago, earning between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly. As for Munisah Kunsul, 51, the incident in Kampung Simunul had actually assured her of better security.
"In fact, we feel safer and encouraged to send our produce to the market more frequently with the constant presence of security forces and their patrolling at sea," she said, expressing her gratitude to the government for helping the community to enhance their livelihood through the seaweed industry.
She said the situation was back to normal following the incident and was confident that security in the district would remain intact. – Bernama
